“He’s supposed to give me
three ‘Our Fathers’ and three ‘Hail Mary’s
and send me on my way”
Although the poem, When My Strength Failith centers on the Catholic church, this piece certainly speaks to other dominations and religions. It is a critique of how both church and clergy operate in this society. She challenges their roles, particularly as it negotiates the responsibility to the poor with idea of being pristine. Her plea of “open the door” is to be taken both literally and metaphorically.
This space is reserved for any comments the author of the piece may have about the points he was trying to get across and the background of why he wrote the poem.
